Wherever you go in India, you will see cows roaming the streets, a Hindu will never harm or kill a cow, nor will he eat beef. The meaning of the sacred cow is misinterpreted by many people. The sacred cow is also sacred because it provides people with milk and labor in the countryside. According to many, without the cow, man would not have had a right to exist in ancient India and Hinduism would not have been able to spread. The cow is therefore central to Hinduism and is worshiped for that reason. It pays homage to an animal referred to by the great Hindu scholars as 'the mother of creatures'.
