Water puppetry is a tradition dating back to the 11th century when it originated in the villages of the Red River delta area of northern Vietnam. Contemporary Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique variation on the ancient Asian puppetry tradition.
The dolls are made of wood and then varnished. The shows are performed in a medium-deep pool. A large bamboo pole supports the puppet underwater and is used by the puppeteers, normally hidden behind a screen, to control it. This is how the puppets seem to move over the water. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers entertained each other with this form of puppetry.
