Sacred cows (Wikipedia)
Wherever you go in India, you will see cows roaming the streets, a Hindu would never harm or kill a cow, nor would he eat beef. This is because of the special attention that the animal pays to its calf. Many Hindus also recognize a female figure (= mother figure) in the drawing on the animal's head. The meaning of the sacred cow is misinterpreted by many people. The sacred cow is partly sacred because it provides people with milk and labor in the countryside. According to many, without the cow, man would have had no right to exist in ancient India and Hinduism would not have been able to spread. The cow is therefore central to Hinduism and is worshiped partly for that reason. It is a tribute to an animal referred to by the great Hindu scholars as 'the mother of creatures'.
